- ItemAN ASSESSMENT OF URBAN GREEN SPACE USING MACHINE LEARNING MODEL FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF ZANZIBAR AT “URBAN WEST REGION(SUZA, 2022-12-01) HAMAD, ASHA AIn this study we assessed the Urban Green Spaces (UGS) at the Urban West Region in Zanzibar using a machine learning-based method (Support Vector Machine) for the aim of classifying the land cover into five classes that include green non-green class (i.e. tree, shrub, grass, High dense buildup area, and low dense build-up area), identifying green connectedness and present reenery change from 2009 to 2081. UGS is very important in maintaining the attractive structure of the urban area which gives a lot of benefits to urban dwellers. In the Urban West Region of Zanzibar Green spaces cover a large area than the build-up area but are unevenly distributed however buildup areas are highly dense and congested on the west side of the Urban West Region.Approximately 0.019% of the area covered decreased from 2009 to 2009, this is due to the damage of the shoreline in a coastal zone of the east side of the Urban West Region. There is a high changing of trees, shrubs, and grass to low dense buildup areas, which eventually will be a high dense buildup area with a lot of problems such as increasing air pollution and mental health problem. Also, thematic maps obtained visualized green connectivity which is low, with the poor spatial pattern of green patches at the west of the Urban West Region due to the higher density of buildup area. Thus Urban Municipalities of Zanzibar should take a strong strategic plan for preserving and upgrading UGS for sustainable urban development in Zanzibar.
- ItemComparative Analysis of Factors Affecting Farmers Cooperatives Development. Case Studies of Zanzibar - Tanzania and Baoding City of China(International Journal of Academic Multidisciplinary Research (IJAMR, 2018-07-02) Ali, Mbarouk J.The main objective of the study was to assess factors affecting development of farmer cooperatives between ZanzibarIsland of Tanzania and Baoding City of China. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection were used to gather necessary information from study area. The responses were elicited from 135 respondents from Zanzibar Island and 140 from Baoding City of China, selected randomly from target population. Furthermore, fifteen key informants from Department of Cooperatives and Ministry of Agriculture from both cases were interviewed to clarify respondent’s answers. In order to identify factors influencing cooperatives development, multiple regression analysis using standardized method together with Statistical Packaging for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17 were used to analyses and interpret data findings. The results showed that, for Zanzibar Island poor provision of cooperatives training, conflicts derived within cooperatives, low level of production and lack of business contract has negative influence on the development of farmer cooperatives. For Baoding City member’s knowledge and skills, and poor participation of members in administrative election has negative influence on the development of farmer cooperatives. In addition, for both case studies poor product technology and value addition, poor construction of marketing channels, lack of knowledge and skills of strategic plan of cooperatives leaders, has negatives influences on the development of farmer’s cooperatives. However good administration system and supporting policy has positively influenced development of farmer in Baoding City. Finally, research suggested remedial measures for both side such as engagement of youth in cooperatives activities, cooperatives should carry out product technology and values addition, including of combining agricultural operation with modern agriculture, administrative concern should improve and construct marketing channels, which will enable cooperatives to avoid loss of benefit from intermediaries.

- ItemFactors Influencing Tourism-Horticulture Linkage among Smallholder Farmers in Zanzibar(International Journal of Humanities and Social Science, 18-06-06) O. Abdalla, Juma; M. K. Bengesi, KennethDespite the government support for inter-sectoral linkages between tourism and other economic sectors, there is inadequate information on the linkage between tourism and horticulture that employ large segment of population in Zanzibar. Failure to establish this linkage has undermined the potential contribution of tourism to the local economy that is driven by smallholder farmers mainly engaged in horticulture farming. Drawing from this background, this paper examined factors influencing tourism-horticulture linkage among smallholder farmers in Zanzibar. Findings revealed that factors influencing tourism-horticulture linkage are quality of horticultural farmers. Failure of farmers to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the tourist industry is partly due to inadequate enterprise mind-set among smallholder farmers. The paper recommends that strategic intervention is crucial to inculcate entrepreneurial mind-set among smallholder farmers to take advantage of emerging tourism market in Zanzibar.
