The paddy plants and soil from Kibokwa basin in Zanzibar were analyzed by assessing the heavy metals distribution. Samples were collected during harvesting period (June – July, 2016) and divided into soil, roots, stems, leaves and grains. The analysis was carried out using Energy Dispersive X- ray fluorescence system (EDXRF) of Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission, Arusha. The analyzed heavy metals were Cd, Cu, As, Cr and Pb. The results obtained showed that all analyzed heavy metals were significantly detected in soil and the ranking order was Cr>Pb>Cu>Cd>As. In paddy plant all metals were detected in all parts except As was not detected in stems, leaves and rice grains. The mean concentrations of the analyzed heavy metals in various part of the paddy plant were statistically significant (p<0.05). The results showed that most of the metals accumulated more in the roots than in other parts. The results obtained from rice grains samples showed that the concentration of Cr, Cd and Pb exceeded FAO/WHO permissible limits and might have implication on human health. Therefore, there should be a specific program to monitor the content of heavy metals in rice grains to protect the public health.en_US
